Undoubtedly one of southern Georgia’s “best-kept secrets,” this park is known for its agricultural history shown at Heritage Farm, with log cabins, a corn crib, a tobacco barn, a cane mill, and other exhibits. Children enjoy seeing the park’s farm animals, which usually include goats, sheep, chickens, pigs, and donkeys.

Seventeen-Mile River and a boardwalk wind through cypress swamp where rare and endangered plants grow. Pitcher plants, shy indigo snakes, and gopher tortoises make their homes in this wiregrass community. Birding and nature photography are exceptional.

Additionally for horse lovers, the park offers 13.4 miles of equestrian trails. Ride-in campsites are primitive, offering exceptional privacy surrounded by nature. Drive-in campsites offer nearby water spigots, pit toilets, grills, fire rings, and picnic tables. Stables are not provided.

Apart from this, the park was donated to the state by a group of Coffee County citizens in 1970 and is named after General John Coffee, a planter, U.S. Congressman, and military leader.

The locally owned and operated Okefenokee Swamp Park is at the northern tip of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and acts as a gateway for thousands of visitors every year into the swamp itself.

Without a doubt, Waycross’ rich athletic history comes together at this massive, 123-acre facility. Three complexes within easy walking distance of each other, and surrounded by plenty of parking, combine to create the sports headquarters of Waycross.

HISTORY
It should be noted that the baseball legend “Shoeless” Joe Jackson once played for the minor league Waycross Coastliners in 1925, but he would be stunned by what he would see today at the Trembling Earth Complex. Importantly there are 12 tournament-quality fields available for baseball, softball, football, and soccer.

Definitely get ready to get dirty at Fat Daddy’s ATV Park, just outside of Waycross. The 500-acre privately owned park on the beautiful Satilla River is a paradise for ATV and UTV enthusiasts. A quick trip of eight miles heading north out of Waycross transports you from the city to a wild world of sand and mud trails that is fun for the whole family.

In addition, the park includes primitive campsites and a few RV sites with water and electric hookups. A shower and bathroom facility is also on the property so you can wash off the mud and sand after an exhilarating day on the trails.

St. Simons Island

St. Simons Island is dotted with exceptional historic sites and attractions, from the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum – a working lighthouse built in 1872 – to the Bloody Marsh Battle Site, where, in July 1742, British and Scottish soldiers protecting colonial Georgia defeated a larger Spanish force in a battle that helped end Spanish incursions outside Florida.

It’s easy to take the forest around you for granted. After a visit to Southern Forest World, you’ll never look at a tree the same way again.

In addition, exhibits include a 38-foot fiberglass loblolly pine with a spiral staircase, a 7-foot-tall scale model of the Saturn rocket that incorporated pine products to take man to the moon, and multiple exhibits that educate visitors on the various forestry-related industries.
